How to Make Taiwanese Sticky Rice (You Fan)
- Soak the dried shiitake mushrooms in warm water for about 30 minutes until they’ve softened thoroughly.
- Rinse the long grain and short grain sticky rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Combine the rinsed sticky rice with water in a pot, then soak it for 30 minutes.
- Heat the sesame oil in a pan over medium heat, then sauté the minced garlic and ginger until fragrant.
- Add the pork belly to the pan and cook until it’s nicely browned.
- Incorporate the dried shrimp, soaked shiitake mushrooms, rock sugar, soy sauce, white pepper powder, and Chinese five-spice powder into the pan.
- Drain the soaked sticky rice and mix it with the meat mixture in the pan.
- Transfer the mixture into a steaming dish, and sprinkle the crispy fried shallots on top.
- Steam the dish for about 30 minutes, or until everything is heated through.
